The role of Oda Mae Brown, the brash, hilarious, and ultimately heartfelt psychic in “Ghost,” was not always hers. In fact, the studio had reservations. Producers were unsure if Whoopi would fit the tone of the film. They auditioned other actresses, even leaned toward safer, more conventional choices. But Patrick Swayze was not having it. During his meeting with director Jerry Zucker, he interrupted the discussion and said firmly, “If you don’t cast Whoopi Goldberg, I’m not doing the movie.”
