Socialism programs were even extremely popular in the US in the 1930s-1950s. Because Jim Crow laws and other racist structures allowed them to exclude Black people from receiving the benefits. Once the Supreme Court and Civil Rights Act made it illegal to exclude Black people from receiving public services, racist whites decided they'd rather side with the wealthy. They would rather all public welfare programs be eliminated entirely rather than to see any Black people receive an ounce of help...
